I always knew I would be an artist.
I was born deep in the heart of Kisatchieland in Louisiana on the same day as “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer and Georgio Moroder began playing on the radio and in the clubs. To this day, Saturdays are still my favorite day of the week.
Although my family lived in poverty, my parents were very supportive and encouraged my artistic interests. I spent hours pouring through art books at the library and took every art class available during my public school education. I worked hard and earned a full college scholarship that resulted in a BFA from Louisiana Tech University.
Aesthetically, I have an affinity for minimal and well designed compositions. I still remember the thrill of seeing images of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints for the first time. Later, I discovered Matisse’s Blue Nudes. I fell in love with the simple, yet effective marriage between color and shape and how he was able to communicate so much with so little.
My primary medium is cut paper. It is a widely available material that is so often discounted and taken for granted. Without paper, there would be no civilization. I use colored card stock and paint samples I’ve rescued from home improvement stores to create my original compositions.
Everyone loves a good story and I am no exception. Going forward, my art will be accompanied by my writings. I decided it was time to build my own art universe instead of simply making a product to hang on a wall. Much of my art world is constructed from my imagined and romanticized version of big city free love gay life in the 1970’s and 1980’s- a world I dreamed of when I felt alone and isolated in my hometown - a gay utopia that would never truly be realized.
I invite you to join me on this new journey.
